Nocturia

Causes and Treatments

Waking up in the middle of the night to urinate is a common occurrence for many adults over 50.

Whether or not it is an issue so severe that it requires professional medical help is at the discretion of the sufferer. Nighttime urination that becomes frequent or bothersome is called nocturia. Frequent bathroom visits combined with trouble falling back asleep or next-day fatigue may warrant a medical consultation.

What Causes Nocturia?

Nocturia is a condition that comes with a variety of possible causes. Here are several of the most common causes:

  • Enlarged prostate
  • Sleep apnea
  • Nighttime release of fluids
  • Beverages before bed
  • Medication side effects
  • Urinary tract infection

This is not a complete list of causes for nocturia. If you are experiencing bothersome or frequent nighttime urination, a medical evaluation is needed to find possible causes and solutions.

How is Nocturia Treated?

Relief from frequent nighttime urination may be as easy as making simple lifestyle changes. If you find yourself making multiple bathroom visits each night, try these steps:

  • Eliminate caffeinated or alcoholic beverages in the evening, which can stimulate urination.
  • Restrict all fluids after the dinner hour.
  • Elevate your legs in the evening as you read or watch television to help the body to drain away excess fluid.
  • Give us a call to see if any of your regular medications could contribute to nocturia.

Be aware that lifestyle changes for nocturia can decrease nighttime bathroom visits but may not eliminate them entirely. Medications used to treat underlying conditions, such as BPH or urinary issues, may be required.

Nocturia is a common, treatable issue that many adults experience. If you are suffering from bothersome nighttime urination, lifestyle changes and a medical consultation may be all you need.

We are currently seeking volunteers to participate in a research study for Night Time Urination.

Study Participants Will Receive:

  • All study-related medical care and study medication at no cost
  • Possible compensation for their time and travel
